After taking classes in Japanese art history and culture for the last year and a half, and realizing that the more I learn, the more I find out there is to learn, I am planning to go to Japan in October. I was there twice, about twenty years ago. I admired the formal qualities of the beautiful temples and objects without understanding their meaning. Now I want to go back and try again. This blog will be a record of my plans, what I find most useful and, finally, my trip. If you want to know more about me, visit my other blog here.
The picture above is a solid wood cat I bought in a flea market in Tokyo in 1985. It remains a great mystery to me; I know nothing about the artist who made it or when it was made. It is my favorite work of art. The cat is 10 inches from tail to nose. It weighs about 4 pounds–heavy for its size. There are no markings on it to indicate a maker; only the chisel marks.
Hi Ruth! I like the cat, too. His (her?) lips look like fish lips. Is it very large? This new blog is really cool.
I would like to see a continuation of the topic
