When I left Japan last November it was with the idea I would never return. After several days at home I realized I had caught the travel bug and wanted not only to return to Japan, but to go somewhere else, also, in particular, China. In fact, I am hoping to spend most of the next year traveling. I considered giving up my apartment but decided I will try to sublet instead. Of course, all of this comes down to money and energy. I’ve often considered joining the Peace Corps. If this year works out well and I still feel like traveling, perhaps I will, but I find the 2 year commitment daunting.
I am considering going to China with Cross Cultural Solutions, a volunteer organization, where I pay for the opportunity to volunteer. That would give me a base in Xian from which I could do some traveling, but mostly teach English, or perhaps basic computer (one of my better skills, obviously better than my English skills) and possibly get to know people and that one city. I find the program very appealing. I’m not as courageous about traveling alone in China as I was in Japan, so this seems like a good alternative.
From China I would return to Japan and spend two months this time. If I still feel like I want to see more, I don’t know what I’ll do. Might have to move there. My next steps will be: order my frequent flier ticket; reserve the Palaceside Hotel in Kyoto for at least a month; speak to my landlord about subletting the apartment.

Earl came for tea, and we had a lovely talk. He is willing to help me sublet the apartment; he was very nice about it. So even though my lease says I can’t do it, I can. Next: the airline ticket.

I’m impressed. Bravo. I’m just getting ready to fly to Salt Lake City and am totally daunted by the new rules. Here you are flying off hither and yon with great delight.
Here’s the blog of a gentleman who lives in Japan……you might find it interesting.
