October 22-Kyoto- This is the annual festival of Heian - jinja Shrine. This event was started in 1895 in celebration of the 1,100th year since the capital had been transferred to Heian-kyo, commemorating October 22, 794, the date that Emperor Kammu entered Heian-kyo. Featured at this festival is the parade of approximately 2,000 people dressed in traditional costumes ranging from the Heian Period to the Meiji Period. Leaving Kyoto Gyoen Park at noon, the parade travels down Karasuma-dori to Sanjo-dori, then down Jingo-do, and toward Heian - jinja Shrine. Kyoto Prefecture Website
